One Week!

One week until I roll on the streets of New York!  I am looking forward to the band catching everyone’s attention as we parade through the city.  I hope they get a real sense of the spirit of Purdue through our presence.  If they don’t see it, they’ll feel it after I roll by! What are you looking forward to about New York and the Macy’s Parade?

Boiler. Maker. Boilermakers.

Makers of the first block P in 1907We are all Boilermakers, but how do we fit into the “Makers, All” campaign?  Brainstorm with me. I am a beat maker and ultimately, a noise maker.  The other band members are formation makers, music makers, and entertainment makers.  What others can you think of? How about you? How are you a maker? How did the band prepare you to become the maker that you are today?

Rookie Crew Member

Talon AtwellThis bandsman I’ve come to know this semester.  No need to interview this man because he is on my crew – Talon Atwell.  Let me tell you a bit about him.  He has come to join the band during his senior year with no prior music experience; however, he brings with him an incredible background.  During middle school and high school he battled cancer and won.  Currently, he is in Air Force ROTC and plans to commission as a weather officer.  Even though he has been a part of the band for a few months, he says the band, the crew, and myself are like family.  What do the band and I mean to you?

Drum History

BBD in 1921 Pre-DiamondsDid you know I used to have metal diamond plates in place of the black painted ones seen on me today?  The painted ones were added to me in 1937, but I don't know exactly when the metal ones were added and removed. For that period of time they did give me a certain flair! Do you have any special memories or knowledge of little known history?

Senior Day

What a great senior day! I had so many fine bandsmen hit me on Saturday to commemorate their time here at Purdue while in the band. Do you remember when you hit me on senior day? How did your time in the band mold you into the leader you are in your community?

Band Patriot

Ryan Schuler with the drum.

A third year trombone player, Ryan Schuler stopped by after band practice yesterday to chat. He is a true All-American. I learned that he was deployed last year to Afghanistan with the Marines for seven months last year. He says band has given him the discipline to be a great Marine. His favorite memory is traveling with the marching band to China and performing for the students there who had never seen a marching band perform. I know that was a fun trip, but they wouldn’t let me on the plane since I am too big! Thanks for serving, Ryan!
What is your favorite band memory? I would love for you to share with me. Just click on the “Leave a comment” link just below and join in the fun!

Two weeks!

Can you believe it? I am looking forward to the parade with so many incredible Purdue band students.  I was told over 50 million people around the world would be watching me, my crew, and the band! What an honor! I just hope the cameras can pick my low frequencies…
